The Story

Of the roughly 350 kinds of apes and monkeys known to mankind, humans stand out thanks to their lack of fur. The repercussions are highly consequential since fur serves as protection against the elements. Its absence necessitates another form of protection – that is why humans invented clothes. We could thus say that clothes make a man.

As is the case with all basic human needs, the production of clothing also weaves its way throughout history. One of the key narrative threads in the story of clothmaking, in this case, is sheep wool. Rich landowners began to erect fences around their properties so that their poorer neighbours could not freeload on their pastures. Those neighbours had to then find jobs in cities and the new steam-powered factories, mostly in the textile industry. While the predominant term is “the Industrial Revolution”, one could also make a strong case for an alternate term: “Textile Revolution”.

The characteristic look of English towns divided by brick walls and fences is therefore a direct result of another barrier. The popularity of the woollen filament has always been fuelled by our body’s ability to shield itself from the vagaries of the weather. At the core of this prized property lies thermal insulation. Heat has a harder time penetrating through wool because it is, just like any good insulator, full of air pockets. That is why I believe that the November sock model made from Merino wool will ensure that thermal energy is on your side even during this upcoming winter.

Material

The arboreal green, temperamental red and starlight yellow are not only colours of this month’s sockscape; they also speak to our sense of aesthetics. Perhaps you will also notice this colour compilation elsewhere, not just on your pedal garment. Your socks combine not only colours but also material.

This month’s model is made up of eighty-five percent combed cotton and is complemented by five percent polyamide. The main structure of the sock contains five percent Lycra and five percent polypropylene. The latter ingredient ensures high tensile strength, while the former contributes greater elasticity and antibacterial protection.

Wishing your socks a colourful month,
